What is involved in a first- second- or third-degree burn?

First-degree burns occur at the first layer of skin. The outer layer of skin reddens, but usually repairs itself within one week. The skin peels away and eventually is replaced by a new layer. The characteristics of second-degree burns include blisters and moist-looking skin that affects the first and second skin layer. Third-degree burns affect all layers of the skin and also damage the underlying tissue. Wounds from third-degree burns will appear dry and either black or white. Permanent scarring from third-degree burns is unavoidable. Phoenix burn injury attorney Jerrold Mayro can meet with you and your family if you have suffered a burn through no fault of your own. You may have a valid legal claim.

Are there different types of burn injuries?

Burns come in a variety of ways, including too much ultraviolet light exposure while tanning to workplace exposure of dangerous chemicals that cause personal injury. Some of different types of burn injuries include:

  • Light burns – due to contact with sunlight or other sources of ultraviolet light
  • Chemical burns – due to contact with an acid or alkali
  • Radiation burns – due to contact with nuclear radiation or ultraviolet light
  • Thermal burns – due to contact with flames, steam, hot liquids and other sources of intense heat

How many people are affected by burn injuries?

According to the American Burn Association, roughly 1.1 million people with burn injuries seek medical attention each year. About 45,000 of those individuals will need hospitalization and half of those will likely be admitted into a specialized burn unit. Unfortunately, 4,500 of those victims will eventually die as a result of their burns.

What causes burn injuries and what makes them so dangerous?

The majority of serious burn injuries are caused by scalding water and flammable fabrics. Burn injuries are only second to auto accidents as the leading cause of death in America. Skin is the first barrier to infection, so when burns destroy the skin, the body becomes extremely vulnerable to infection.

What are the estimated treatment costs for burn injury patients?

Serious burns are known as one of the most expensive injuries to treat, running as high as $200,000 for initial hospitalization and doctors fees for a patient with just 30 percent of the body affected. Costs will continue to rise for those with more extensive burns that require repeated hospitalization for reconstruction and also for rehabilitation.
